I think this is really up to you. I find a lot of italics distracting as well. It might be more of a personal preference.
Should internal dialogue/thoughts italicized? I have been advised in a writer's workshop to italicize the internal dialogue in my manuscript, but I have always found italics to be jarring when reading them in other books, and notice that not all books do that anyway. Do agents, and editors, feel strongly one way or another about this? Or do I need to get over it and start italicizing?— Anonymous
